Sergeant Shirel E. Loomis (1945 – 2023)

Shirel was born on May 28, 1945 to Robert Edward and Margarette Loomis. He attended Norwood High School.

After high school, Shirl joined the United States Air Force. Sergeant Loomis was honorably discharged in 1968.

 On September 30, 1968, he joined the Norwood Police Department as a Patrolman. By 1978, he was promoted to Detective. He was promoted again, on November 6, 1981, to Sergeant. For a time, Sergeant Loomis was also the police officers’ choice to negotiate wages with the city. Sergeant Loomis retired on August 24, 2000 with 36 years of service to his country and community and several letters of appreciation and/or commendation.

Sergeant Loomis died on August 15, 2023 at the age of 78.

He is survived by his daughters, Nikkie Lynn, Jamie Leigh, and Kaitlyn Suzanne.

Visitation will be held 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, August 20, 2023 at Vorhis & Ryan Funeral Home at 5501 Montgomery Road in Norwood. A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m.
