Deputy Richie Alvie Schmaltz (1941-2025)

Richie was born on Monday, June 9, 1941 in Moores Hill, Indiana, the last of three sons born to Robert L. and Margarette (Britton) Schmaltz. He attended Dillsboro High School where he played basketball. Richie was inducted as an officer into the Future Farmers of America in October 1958. He graduated high school in 1959.

Richie served as a Dillsboro Deputy Sheriff and in the Dillsboro Volunteer Fire Department.

He later worked at the Seagram distillery for 50 years.

A lifelong blood donor, by September 1996, he had donated two gallons.

Deputy Schmaltz died at the age of 83 on April 1, 2025 with his family at his side at the Manderley Health Care Center.

He was predeceased by his brother. Daniel A. Schmaltz (2015). Deputy Schmaltz is survived by his wife of 63 years,  Cheryl Maxine (Liston) Schmaltz; children, Michael Dean Schmaltz, Melissa Dawn (Stacy) Sites, and Dianna Kay (Mark) Bowling; grandchildren Thierrin, Brittany, Tyler, Christopher, Makenzie, and Max; great-grandchildren Tessa, Olivia, Harper, Kileigh, and Cadin; and brother William “Bud” Schmaltz.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorials may be given in honor of Richie to American Cancer Society.
