Mike was born June 6, 1946. He joined the Cincinnati Police Division as a Police Recruit on July 13, 1967. He was promoted to Patrolman on October 22, 1967, issued Badge 421, and assigned to District 7 (813 Beecher Street). He served variously thereafter in District 3 (3201 Warsaw Avenue), District 7, and Police Communications Section (310 Ezzard Charles Drive). During 197 a9, Police Officer Sweeney was commended for saving the life of a 10-month-old child.
He was promoted to Sergeant on November 3, 1981, issued Badge S-72, and assigned to Districts 1. Sergeant Sweeney also served in District 4 (4150 Reading Road), District 3, and District 2 (3295 Erie Avenue). During 1982, he was commended for the apprehension of a stabbing suspect. He received a Chief’s Commendation in 1988 for the arrest of a robber and again in 1993 for the arrest of two following a shooting at Western Hills High School. Sergeant Sweeney retired December 17, 1994, with 27 years of service and 60 letters of appreciation and/or commendation.
When the Greater Cincinnati Police Museum opened in 2006, Sergeant Sweeney began volunteering and became a fixture on Tuesday mornings. Very often he would show up to work even when not schedule and could be always counted on at special events, until his death on March 4, 2015, at the age of 68.
