Sergeant Monte Mayer
(1952-2025)
Monte was born July 8, 1952 to Walter F. and Joanne (Ullrey) Mayer. He attended Hamilton Taft High School. He then attended Miami University majoring in finance while working for his father at the Columbia Federal Savings and Loan in Hamilton. Monte graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1974 and was elected Assistant Secretary. He continued with the S&L, working his way up to vice president. He and his father were highly active in the Hamilton Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary Lodge 19. Both he and his father were long-term Butler County Special Deputies. His father was also briefly a Deputy under Sheriff Richard Holzberger. His grandfather, Frank X. “Pop” Mayer served 38 years as a Hamilton Patrolman. The Hamilton Police Department target range is named for him. When Home Federal Bank acquired the S&L in 1991, he returned to his roots.
Monte joined the Butler County Sheriff’s Office on June 8, 1992 as a Deputy Jailer. In 1995, he transferred to Crime Prevention as a Deputy Sheriff. He was promoted to Detective on May 8, 1999. Detective Mayer was transferred to Public Information Officer in January 2002. He was promoted to Sergeant on March 25, 2006 and maintained his spokesman duties. In February 2009, Sergeant Mayer additionally picked up responsibilities for Court Services, Inmate Transportation, and U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement/U.S. Marshal Service Liaison. In March 2011, he transferred to Operational Support Division. Though he picked up additional duties along the way, regardless of his rank and assignment Sergeant Mayer did not pass them along to anyone else. Additionally, he was involved in TRIAD (Senior Assistance Program), Finance, Personnel, Civil Foreclosures, CCW, and eSORN (sexual offender registration). Sergeant Mayer retired in 2014. He returned to Butler County on December 13, 2017 as a civilian assigned to Civil sales. On March 19, 2020, he resigned with 24 total years of service to the people of Butler County.
Sergeant Mayer died suddenly on March 4, 2025.
Sergeant Mayer is survived by his wife of 44 years, Rebecca J. (Collins) Mayer; children, Nicole (James) Sackenheim and Brandon (Rose) Mayer; grandchildren, Tyler (Nicole) Wilson, Jordan (Jennifer) Wilson, Keith Mayer, Avery Mayer, and Jaxson Sackenheim; great-grandchildren Arya and Cooper; and sisters, Billie Jo Cole and Marianne (Brian) Hildreth.
Memorial Service to be held Tuesday, March 11, 2025 from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. at the Webster Funeral Home, 3080 Homeward Way, Fairfield, OH
