Police Officer James Jacob Hey P-376
(1940-2025)
Jim was born March 7, 1940 in Cincinnati to Carl Arthur and Justine (Mueller) Hey of Cheviot. He attended Elder High School, participated in football and track and field, and graduated in 1959. He then attended Xavier University until 1969 majoring in accounting and minoring in economics. In 1964, he completed the Dale Carnegie Course in Public Speaking.
He did clerical work on the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Route Desk from February to August 1960. He then drove a truck for Pepsi Cola until February 1966 and left because of the constant strikes. He then did electrical work for Cincinnati and Suburban Bell Telephone Company.
On February 28, 1962, Jim joined the United States Army Reserves. He took basic training at Fort Knox and advanced training at Fort Eustis, Virginia. He was then assigned to the 480th Ordnance Company out of the Outcalt Reserve Center in Sharonville. Specialist 5 Hey was honorably discharged on January 8, 1969 with a Sharpshooter’s Medal.
Jim joined the Cincinnati Police Division on March 12, 1967 in the 48th Recruit Class. He was promoted to Patrolman on June 4, 1967, issued Badge 376, and assigned to District 3 (3201 Warsaw Avenue). On November 15, 1970, Patrolman Hey rotated to District 4 (7017 Vine Street). Three months later, he transferred to District 1 (310 Lincoln Park Drive). On February 2, 1975, Officer Hey transferred to the Criminal Justice Unit of the Program Management Bureau. Seven years later, at the beginning of 1982, he transferred to the Planning, Research, and Development Section. He was published twice in the FBI Journal. On June 15, 1986, he transferred to the Operations Bureau Administration Section. On August 5, 1990, he transferred to the Park Unit. Officer Hey retired on January 4, 1992 with 30 years of service to his country and community and fifteen letters of appreciation and/or commendation.
Officer Hey died on March 8, 2025, one day after his 85th birthday.
He was predeceased by his sister Phyllis (Joseph) Thiem and brother-in-law, Kenneth J. (Janet) Schneider. Officer Hey is survived by his wife of 62 years Myra Ann (Schneider) Hey; children, Regina (John) Levy, James (Beth) Hey, Kelly (Andrew) Fury, and Carla Hey; grandchildren, Nicholas Levy, Matthew (Tamber) Levy, James Levy, Maggie (Kurt) James, Jacob Hey, Olivia (Blake) Ballard, Kyle (Hannah) Fury, Ryan (Abby) Fury, and Adam Levy; great-grandchildren, Maci James, Riley James, and Grayson Fury; and sisters-in-law, Marilyn (James) Harris and Linda (Joseph) Beck.
A graveside service will be held at Glen Haven Cemetery on March 13, 2025, at 1:00 PM.
Memorials may be made to Children’s Hospital Heart Unit.
