Trooper Tommy Ray Fields
(1948-2025)
Tom was born November 2, 1948 to William Butler Fields, Jr., and Carol R. (Borland) Fields of the Riverside neighborhood in Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended Oak Hills High School where he participated in Band, Swimming, Student Council, Stage Crew, and Thespians.
After high school, Tom joined the United States Marine Corps. By May 1969, he was a Corporal at the Headquarters and Maintenance Squadron of Marine Aircraft Group 13, First Marine Aircraft Wing in Vietnam. After two tours in Vietnam, Sergeant Fields was honorably discharged.
Tom then joined the Ohio State Highway Patrol. He graduated from the Patrol Academy in July 1971, was assigned to the Hamilton Post, and patrolled the west side of Hamilton County. On September 28, 1977, he was late in arriving for official photographs for becoming an Ace because he was pursuing at high speeds another stolen vehicle on Interstate 75. Trooper Fields resigned about 1981 after 15 years of service to his country and community.
He went on to work for The Limited in logistics for 20 years. After retiring, he volunteered at Habitat for Humanity.
Trooper Fields died surrounded by family at Kobacker House on January 9, 2025 at the age of 76.
Trooper Fields is survived by his wife of 38 years, Mary Bernadette (Winiesdorf) Fields; children, Sarah (Mike) Carlson, Laura (Timothy) Fields, Tommy Fields II, and Elena Huxman; eight grandchildren, Violet, Jax, William, Alyssa, Jade, Ethan, Aiden, Izjah; and siblings, David (Pat) Fields and Danzi (Bob) Sunderman.
A visitation was held Friday, January 17, 2025 at Newcomer Funeral Home in Powell, Ohio.
The Greater Cincinnati Police Historical were not aware of his death before the funeral.
