Medical Assistant Supervisor Alexander Stephen Lackner
(1948-2024)
Alex was born November 6, 1948 in Cincinnati to Bernard and Anna Lackner. He attended Courter Technical High School and graduated in June 1967.
On May 3, 1968, he joined the United States Army and served in Vietnam, in the 335th Transportation Company, as a mechanic and later served as a crew chief on a helicopter gunship. He returned to the United States in 1969 and served at Hunter Army Airfield until 1971. On April 30, 1971, Sergeant Lackner was honorably discharged and joined the 377th Military Police Reserves.
After Vietnam, he resided in Savannah. He initially worked for two trucking companies. In December 1971, he took a position as an aide at the Georgia Regional Hospital in Savannah, working with children that were severely mentally ill and intellectually and developmentally disabled. He also attended Savannah Vocational Technical School to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.
While on vacation in Cincinnati, Alex learned that the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office was looking to start up an in-house medical unit. He joined the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office on September 30, 1974 as a Paramedic, the only employee in the meducal unit. He grew and improved the unit. In 1975, he completed the Police Academy. He sometimes testified in court regarding his observations of prisoners when they asserted innocence due to inasanity. In 1980, he was credited by the Chief Deputy in saving the life a man who attempted suicide. He served until at least October 2003.
Medical Assistant Lackner and his first, Cindy, were also the in-house home parents in 1988 at Youth Haven in Newport (later moved to Alexandria).
Medical Assistant Lackner become ill and entered a Veterans Administration nursing facility in the spring of 2024. He died on May 13, 2024.
He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn (Bond) Lackner (2021), and sister, Rebecca Ann Leigh (March 2024). Medical Assistant Lackner is survived by his sons, Nick Lackner and Chris Lackner; granddaughters, Elizabeth Gerbus and Samantha Lackner; great-granddaughter, Ryan; and siblings, Bernard Lackner and Emily Maghathe.
There were no services. He was buried at Spring Grove Cemetery.
