Administrative Assistant Rufus McCall
(1947-2024)
Rufus was born July 15, 1947, to Joseph L. and Willie R. McCall. He attended Courter Technical High School, graduating in June 1967. He also attended the University of Cincinnati in 1973 and Ohio Mechanics Institute in 1976.
While is school, in 1963, he began working at Louis Meats on East McMillan Avenue. In 1967 he moved to Procter Gamble in St. Bernard, to the Masonite Corporation in Evendale in 1968, and then to General Electric in Evendale until 1974.
Rufus married Patricia Winfrey in July 1968 and they had a daughter, Sheila Raynee McCall, in 1970.
On July 1, 1974, Rufus joined the Cincinnati Workhouse as a Guard. Within a few years, he was promoted to Sergeant of Corrections. On August 15, 1981, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office took responsibility for the Workhouse, and he was appointed Corrections Supervisor 1. However, he was immediately assigned as an Acting Corrections Supervisor 2 and by April 1982 was promoted to that position. He was promoted to Lieutenant of Corrections on June 23, 1987, and earned glowing personnel evaluations for the next several years. On July 3, 1987, Lieutenant McCall was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Human Involvement Project, an organization dedicated to helping troubled youths and their families. During 1989, he served as the public information officer for the Hamilton County Association of Minority Law Enforcement Officers. On February 20, 2001, Lieutenant McCall was appointed by the Cincinnati City Manager John F. Shirey to the city’s Human Services Advisory Committee and by November 2004, he was elected Chairman of the committee. On July 1, 2004, he was appointed Administrative Assistant (Corrections). Due more to medical issues than length of years, Administrative Assistant McCall retired on October 8, 2012, with 38 years of service to his City and County.
Administrative Assistant McCall died on February 29, 2024, at the age of 76. We believe he is survived by his wife and daughter.
Visitation will be held 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday, March 15, 2024, at Walker Funeral Hom at 2625 Gilbert Avenue. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m.
