Lieutenant Jerry Kyles L-58
(1948-2024)

 

 

Jerry was born September 6, 1948. He attended Withrow High School in September 1966, during which, he played on the 1962 football champion Samuel Ach Golden Eagles and the Withrow High School football team at Defensive End. He also starred on Withrow’s track team in the two-mile relay. He graduated in 1966. He attended the University of Cincinnati for two years until 1976, majoring in law enforcement.

From March 1966 for three months, Jerry worked for the United States Post Office as a postal clerk. In July 1966, he worked at R. K. LeBlond as a truck driver. He went to work as a meatcutter at Kahn’s in February 1967.

Jerry joined the Cincinnati Police Division on July 30, 1972 in its 57th Recruit Class. He was promoted to Patrolman on December 17, 1972, issued Badge 47, and assigned to District 1 (310 Lincoln Park Drive). On March 12, 1978, he transferred to District 5 (1012 Ludlow Avenue). On August 25, 1980, he transferred to the Youth Aid Squad as a School Resource Officer. He was promoted to Sergeant on November 3, 1981, issued Badge S-103, and reassigned to District 5. Little more than a year later, Sergeant Kyles was rotated back to District 1. In 1984, he was chosen among several candidates to attend assessment training in St. Louis, Missouri. On April 7, 1985, he was transferred to the Recruiting Unit in Personnel Section. Sixteen months later, Sergeant Kyles transferred to Internal Investigation Section and completed an Internal Investigations Course in Louisville, Kentucky.

He was promoted to Lieutenant on May 22, 1988, issued Badge L-58, and reassigned to District 5. Lieutenant Kyles transferred to Crime Prevention Unit on June 11, 1990. In 1992, Mayor Dwight Tillery named him to a 21-member commission on youth. On March 22, 1992, he transferred to District 4 (4150 Reading Road). Two years later, he transferred to the Property Crimes Unit, which included the Violent Crimes Task Force, Crime Stoppers, and the Fraud Squad at the Criminal Investigation Section (824 Broadway). In Ohio’s Law Enforcement Olympics in July 1992, Lieutenant Kyles took three gold  and one silver medals in track and went on to compete in the nationals in Washington DC. Lieutenant Kyles, in his off time, was also a basketball and football coach for many years. During May 1993, he earned the Police Work with Children award from the Police Appreciation Awards Dinner during Police Memorial Week. On December 29, 1995, he was elected to the Executive Board of the Sentinel Police Association. Lieutenant Kyles retired on February 19, 2000, with 27 years of service and 37 letters of appreciation and/or commendation, including two from Councilman/Mayor Dwight Tillery.

Lieutenant Kyles fought multiple maladies over the years. He died at Jewish Hospital in Kenwood on October 27, 2024 at the age of 76.

Visitation will be held 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, November 7, 2024 at New Jerusalem Baptist Church, 26 W. North Bend Road. FOP Services will be at 10:45 a.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. followed by interment at Vine Street Cemetery, 3701 Vine Street. A repast will be held 4 to 6 p.m. at the FOP Hall, 1900 Central Parkway.
