Deputy Joel Markowski
(1969-2024)

 

 

Joel was born in San Angeles, Philippines on November 11, 1969, to Paul and Maria Markowski. He attended Kettering-Fairmont High School, in Kettering, Ohio, and participated in gymnastics and track. He graduated in 1987.

Joel enlisted in the United States Army with basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in August 1988.

On September 25, 1998, Joel joined the Sugarcreek Township (Greene County) Police Department as a Part Time Police Officer. By 1999, he was working as a Bellbrook High School Resource Officer.

Officer Markowski then joined the Butler County Sheriff’s Office as a part-time School Resource Officer on August 9, 2016, at Edgewood (Trenton) and New Miami High Schools, until August 17, 2018. He served as a Special Deputy from September 26, 2018 to November 12, 2019, at which time he took the position again of part-time School Resource Officer. During July 2020, he returned to Special Deputy status and served until his death.

Deputy Markowski died unexpectedly on Thursday, August 15, 2024, in Hamilton, at the age of 54.

Deputy Markowski is survived by his wife of 16 years, Amy Markowski; children, Christopher Kyle (Ashley), Mindy (Eric), Chelsea Ann, Samantha Jordan, Abriana, Marlayshia, Madelynn, Nyla, Bryson, Charlynn, and Landon; grandchildren, Cayden, Aliza, Clayton, Micah, and Tristan; parents; siblings, Maria Markowski and Jennifer (Matt) Miller; parents-in-law, Harlen and Cyndi Miller; and siblings-in-law, Billy and Keith Miller, Doug and John Dillon, and Eryc and Mitchell Miller.

A visitation will be held 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at the Hamilton Christian Center, 1940 Millville Avenue, in Hamilton. A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. with Reverend Curtus Moak officiating.
