Detective Glen Dewayne Shortt (1937-2026)

Glen Short was born on April 1, 1937 outside of Pound, Virginia, one of four children born to Glen and Nokie Shortt. He attended Pound High School where he played football and graduated in 1954.

He immediately thereafter joined the United States Army, 711th Airborne Ordinance Battalion and served in occupied Germany. On March 26, 1957, Specialist 3rd Class Shortt was as honorably discharged.

After the military service, he married his high school sweetheart, Frankie Irene Cox and moved to Middletown, Ohio where he worked in factories and served in the Ohio National Guard.

Glen joined the Middletown Police Department in 1959. He graduated from the Dayton Police Academy and began his career walking a beat, then as a Patrol Officer. He trained in Kansas City to become one of the first Canine Officers in Southwest Ohio. He finished his career as a General Assignment Detective. Detective Shortt retired in 1989 with 35 years of service to his country and community.

After retiring, he raised a few heads of cattle and helped other farmers with their chores.

Detective Short died peacefully in his sleep at his residence in Germantown on September 8, 2026 at the age of 89.

He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Frankie Irene (Cox) Shortt; brother, Anthony Shortt; and grandson, Joshua. Detective Shortt is survived by his son, retired Middletown Detective David (Brenda) Short, and daughter, Sarah Lynn (Dan); granddaughter, Brie (Seth); great-granddaughters, Maive and Maggie; and sisters, Annie Ruth and Gay (David).

A Visitation will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. on October 29, 2026 at Dalton’s Funeral Home in Germantown. A remembrance service will be held at 6 p.m. He will be laid to rest at the Shortt Family Cemetery in Pound, Virginia on November 7th.
