Beginning July 5, 1942, Norwood Chief of Police Charles Fritz established stakeouts at various Norwood pharmacies because a man had been committing armed robberies in area drugstores. On July 8, 1942, Sergeant Overberg, 1941 Maple Avenue, and his wife Agnes were entertaining friends that they had not seen for two years. Sergeant Overberg was assigned to Lawson’s Drugstore, 4320 Franklin Avenue at 10 pm. It was only 4/10ths of a mile from his home. Almost half an hour later, Mrs. Overberg and her guests heard a siren. Mrs. Overberg commented, “I guess Tony got his man.” It wasn’t long before she was notified that her husband was shot and fighting for his life.
