Specialist Daniel Glen Wintersteen PS-93
(1942-2025)
Dan was born January 24, 1942 to Roy and Margaret M (Newberry) Wintersteen. He attended Western Hills High School, graduating in June 1959. He then went to Ohio State University until January 1960. He also attended the University of Cincinnati Evening College majoring in Accounting and Psychology, and Chase Law School and University of Cincinnati majoring in Police Science and Philosophy until June 1961.
On September 24, 1960, Dan joined the United States Marine Corps Reserves. His Basic Training was at Parris Island, and he went to Camp Lejeune for three months. He was released from active-duty March 24, 1961 and honorably discharged from the Reserves on August 24, 1966.
Dan joined the Cincinnati Police Division on September 11, 1961 as a Police Cadet. Cadet Wintersteen was assigned to Central Station (city jail at City Hall) and Identification Section while attending the University of Cincinnati. On May 23, 1964, he was appointed to the 42nd Recruit Class. He was promoted to Patrolman on June 28, 1964, issued Badge 820, and assigned to District 3 (3201 Warsaw Avenue). On July 3, 1966, he was rotated to District 2 (314 Broadway). From 1967 until his retirement, he received “Outstanding” performance evaluations from his supervisors and commanders.
On July 26, 1970, he transferred to Special Operations Section (310 Lincoln Park Drive). Having finished fifth on the promotional examination, he was promoted to Police Specialist on July 26, 1972, issued Badge PS-93, and assigned to the Tactical Patrol Section. Specialist Winterstein also served in District 5 (1012 Ludlow Avenue) and Criminal Investigation Section (222 E. Central Parkway). On June 3, 1972, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in police administration from the University of Cincinnati. While at the Criminal Investigation Section he was considered one of the top Fraud Squad and Document Squad detectives and fraud instructors. Specialist Wintersteen retired on January 31, 1992 with 31 years of service to his country and community and an amazing 62 letters of appreciation and/or commendation, including some from police chiefs, attorneys, FBI, prosecutors, Secret Service, et al.
For years, Specialist Wintersteen has been battling a rare cancer of the nervous system. He died at 4 p.m. on March 20, 2025 at the age of 83.
His remains will be buried at a later date with his wife of more than 50 years, Judith Ann (Bunger) Wintersteen, at Arlington Memorial Cemetery.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
