Assistant Chief Dennis William “Denny” Ohmer, Sr. (1949-2023)

Denny was born March 11, 1949, to George E. and LaVerne M. (Guenther) Ohmer of Adams Road in Mt. Healthy.  He graduated from Mt. Healthy High School in 1967.  

Late in 1968, he was working as a machinist and married Charlene M. Sparks. Together, they had four children.

  Denny joined the Mt. Healthy Police Department January 16, 1974 as a Patrolman.  He was promoted to Sergeant/Assistant Chief about 1983 and commanded the Third Relief for most of the rest of his career.  He served as Acting Police Chief for about one year during 1992 and 1993. Assistant Chief Ohmer retired January 31, 2002 with 28 years of service. 

He was a member of FOP Lodge #113.

Assistant Chief Ohmer and his wife recently moved to assisted living for her care. He died on June 11, 2023, at the age of 74.

He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Donald Crank. Assistant Chief Ohmer is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Charlene M. (Sparks) Ohmer; children, Mary Jane “Janie” (Andy) Scheffler, Dennis W. (Sunni) Ohmer II, Paul Edward (Paige) Ohmer, and Amy Elizabeth (Joe) Egloff; grandchildren, Danny, Drew, Nik, Emma, TJ, Faith, Tristen, and Corinne; eight great-grandchildren; and sister, Janice Crank.

Visitation will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at the Neidhard Young Funeral Home at 7401 Hamilton Avenue in Mt. Healthy. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Burial to follow at Venice Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the FOP Lodge #113 Memorial Fund, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, or Gary Sinise Foundation.
