Sergeant Gregory David Lewton S-124

Greg was born June 5, 1955 in Cincinnati to Mr. and Mrs. John C. Lewton. He attended Fairfield High School in Leesburg, Ohio and graduated in June 1973. He then attended the Western Brown campus of the University of Cincinnati, majoring in Police Science, until 1974.

On June 8, 1976, three days following his 21st birthday, Greg joined the Glendale Police Department as a Police Officer. In 1983, he was promoted to Lieutenant and then in August 1986, he was appointed Police Chief. He completed the 162nd Session of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Nation Academy. Chief Lewton resigned on June 9, 1991, with exactly 15 years of service, almost five of which were as Police Chief.

On November 4, 1991, he returned to law enforcement, appointed a Deputy Sheriff with the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office. He resigned on May 18, 1992 upon receiving nearly simultaneous offers of employment from the Colerain Township Police Department and the Cincinnati Police Division.

On June 7, 1992, two days following his 37th birthday, Chief Lewton joined the Cincinnati Police Department in its 76th Recruit Class. He was promoted to Police Officer on November 25, 1992, issued Badge 286, and assigned to District 1 (310 Ezzard Charles Drive). On November 14, 1993, Officer Lewton was rotated to District 2 (3295 Erie Avenue). He transferred back to District 1 on October 16, 1994. Three years later, he was promoted to Sergeant, issued Badge S-124, and re-assigned to District 2, 3295 Erie Avenue. Sergeant Lewton was assigned to Internal Investigation Section on March 5, 2000. Two years later, he transferred to Event Planning Unit of District 1, the in a restructuring in 2020 to the Central Business District performing the same function. Sergeant Lewton, in his second career in law enforcement, retired on October 17. 2020 with 28 years of service, the last 18 of which planning almost every special event in the central business district of Cincinnati from the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals football games to the annual Riverfest. Almost without precedent, during those 2¼ decades, he was never involved in a single auto accident. He received 29 letters of appreciation and/or commendation.

Police Chief/Deputy/Sergeant Lewton served three communities for a total of 44 years. He was also a Life Member of CincinnatiFraternal Order of Police Lodge 69.

Sergeant Lewton was diagnosed with cancer about 2024. He died on August 20, 2026 at the age of 71.

Sergeant Lewton is survived by his former wife, Deborah Jean (Robertson) Lewton; children Gregory Brandon and Jennifer Lauren; and grandchildren Hannah Jane and Brandon Albert; and sisters, Linda (James) Mitchell and Christine (Gary) Stroup.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.
