Lieutenant William Sherman “Bill” Fields, Jr.
(1952-2026)

 

Bill was born on February 14, 1952 in Cincinnati to William S. Fields, Sr., and Ona (Youngblood) Fields.

After high school, Bill joined the United States Army and was honorably discharged.

Bill joined the Springdale Police Department on March 10, 1980. He attended the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy from May 5 to July 11, 1980. Upon graduation, he began working as a Police Officer. By 1991, Officer Fields was assigned to investigations. He was promoted to Sergeant on October 19, 1991. On January 8, 1995, he was promoted to Detective Sergeant. In 1996, he was named Springdale’s “ Donald W. Stemann Employee of the Year.”

He was promoted to Detective Lieutenant on September 26, 1999. Lieutenant Fields completed the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy on September 12, 2002. In 2003, he earned the Springdale Police Department Dependability Award. Lieutenant Fields transferred to Patrol on January 25, 2004. On May 18, 2004, he was recognized at the Annual Peace Officer Memorial Award Banquet for the Most Constructive Plans or Ideas for Improvement of Police Operations. Later in his career, he was assigned as the Chief’s Administrative Lieutenant.

During his career, Lieutenant Fields investigated several high-profile cases, several homicides, organized crime, and a bank robbery. He also graduated from the Police Executive Leadership College. On May 5, 2010, Lieutenant Field retired with 30 years of service.

Lieutenant Fields died about 2 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2026.

He was predeceased by his son, Williams S. Fields III (1993). Lieutenant Fields is survived by his wife, Theresa (Stepp) Fields; sisters, Corda Ann (John Jr.) Yungbluth and Bennie Steiner; and mother-in-law, Marcella Stepp.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Vorhis & Ryan Funeral Home at 11365 Springfield Pike. A funeral service will begin at 12 p.m. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
