Lieutenant Donald Charles “”Andy” Andres L-39
(1938-2025)

 

 

Don was born on July 15, 1938 to Edward and Hazel K. (McLean) Andres. He went to Elder High School where he played baseball and football. He graduated in June 1956. He then attended Xavier University until 1960, majoring in Economics and minoring in Psychology.

In June 1960, Don joined the Ohio National Guard. He served in active duty for six months and was awarded Honor Trainee. He was honorably discharged in June 1966.

From December 1960 to March 1961, Don worked for Household Finance as a consumer finance representative. He then went to work for Duro Wall Construction until May 1961.

Don joined the Cincinnati Police Division on May 22, 1961 in its 39th Recruit Class. He was promoted to Patrolman on August 28, 1961, issued Badge 38, and assigned to District 3 (3201 Warsaw Avenue). On January 1, 1963, he was rotated to District 1 (310 Lincoln Park Drive). On July 24, 1965, Patrolman Andres was involved in a shootout with a man who was trying to kill his estranged wife. On July 7, 1968, he requested to go back to District 3. On June 22, 1969, he was promoted to Police Specialist, issued Badge PS-93, and assigned to the Tactical Unit. On February 14, 1971, he was promoted to Sergeant, issued Badge S-48, and assigned to District 4 (7017 Vine Street). Sergeant Andres was rotated to District 3 on July 2, 1972. He was assigned to Internal Investigation Section on May 21, 1977.

He was promoted to Lieutenant on September 16, 1979, issued Badge L-39, and again assigned to District 3. One month later, he transferred to District 1. On September 5, 1982, Lieutenant Andres was assigned to the Chief’s Office. He transferred back to District 3 on July 28, 1985. Three months later, Lieutenant Andres was assigned as the Traffic Section Commander. He returned to District 3 one last time on June 17, 1990. In his 29 years in law enforcement, he never had an at-fault auto accident. Lieutenant Andres retired on July 13, 1990, two days before his 52nd birthday, with 30 years of service to his country and community and 14 letters of appreciation and/or commendation, including two from Police Chiefs and one from the City Manager.

Lieutenant Andres died peacefully on November 21, 2025 at the age of 87.

He was predeceased by his son, Scott D. Andres (1992). Lieutenant Andres is survived by his wife of 64 years, Roselyn Ann (Dabbelt) Andres; children, Donald C. (Robin) Andres, Jr., and Jeffrey Andres; and brother-in-law Dave (Kathy) Dabbelt.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2025 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Radel Funeral Home at 650 Neeb Road. A blessing service will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Interment to follow at  Old St. Joseph Cemetery at 3819 West Eighth Street. A celebration of life will be held at Jim and Jacks on River Road.

Memorials may be made to Elder High School, Hospice of Cincinnati, or Brighton Center.
