Police Sergeant John Edward Ott S-124 (1949-2018)

John was born July 25, 1949 to John Edward Ott, Jr., the owner of an automobile services station, and Audrey May (Hille) Ott, the daughter of the late Sergeant Carl F. Hille, a Cincinnati policeman killed in the line of duty in 1942.  John attended Roger Bacon High School, graduating in 1967.

While attending high school, he worked as a meat cutter for Brookdale market on Springdale Road.

John followed in his grandfather’s footsteps when he joined the Cincinnati Police Division as a Police Cadet on July 23, 1967.  He simultaneously attended the University of Cincinnati, majoring in Police Science.  Cadet Ott worked in Central Detention (City Hall) and District 5 (1012 Ludlow Avenue).  He was promoted to Police Recruit on September 13, 1970 and to Patrolman on January 3, 1971, issued Badge 741, and assigned to District 5.  Nine years later, Police Officer Ott transferred to District 1 (310 Lincoln Park Drive).  On August 8, 1983, he was promoted to Sergeant, issued Badge S-124, and assigned to District 3 (3201 Warsaw Avenue).  He transferred to District 4 (4150 Reading Road) on January 13, 1985 and worked in their mini-tac.  Sergeant Ott transferred to Operations Street Corner (a street-level drug enforcement unit) on April 1, 1990.  On July 14, 1991, he transferred to Criminal Investigation Section; first assigned to the Property Crimes Unit then to the Homicde Unit.  He transferred back to District 5 on February 16, 1997.  Sergeant Ott retired on September 6, 1997, with 30 years of service and 21 letters of appreciation and/or commendation.

John has been ill for some time with cancer.  He passed away peacefully under hospice care in Tampa, Florida on November 26, 2018 at the age of 69.

A memorial service will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at the Mainlands Unit 4114 89th Avenue North in Pinellas Park, Florida.

A local celebration of life will be held 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday December 8, 2018 at Garden Park Unity Church at 3581 W. Galbraith Road.  A FOP service ill be held at 3:30 p.m.

  1. John was a great guy. He worked hard, and deserved a much longer retirement. The good die far too young!

  2. John and I were friends in he old neighborhood of Northbrook. Our paths after graduation were different – John with the police mine with the Marine Corps.. he was a great friend!
