Dave was born April 9, 1969 in Lawrenceburg to Paul and Rosalie “Rosie” (Lawson) Hewitt of Rising Sun.  He attended Rising Sun High School and graduated during 1987.  He also attended Vincennes University and Indiana Police Academy where he graduated with a degree in law enforcement.

Dave joined the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office and Dearborn County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy and then the Lawrenceburg Police Department as a Police Officer. Officer Hewitt then joined the Rising Sun Police Department as a Police Officer in 1998.  He was promoted to Police Chief during 2004.  By 2019, he had served 27 years, including two sheriff’s offices, two cities, and in three Indiana counties.

Brent T. Bascom, Mayor City of Rising Sun, Indiana ordered flags to be flown on municipal buildings at half-staff for 27 days.

Chief Hewitt is survived by his wife, Donna (Taylor) Hewitt; children, Olivia Hewitt and Andrew “Drew” Hewitt; parents, Paul and Rosie Hewitt; sisters Denise (Russell) Taylor and Lisa (David) Williams; and stepchildren, Jake Taylor and Sydney Taylor.

On Friday, February 15, 2019, his remains were escorted back to Rising Sun by police escort consisting of units from Switzerland, Oldham, Henry, and Carroll Counties.  The route was lined with grieving citizens of Rising Sun.

Visitation will be held 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at Rising Sun High School.  Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 20, 2019.
