Lost and Found

“Lost and Found”

Lost and Found was sculpted in 1987 by Gary Coulter, also known for the International Association Fallen Firefighters Memorial statue, Somewhere – Everyday, in Colorado Springs Colorado; Safe in his Arms stature of a SWAT Officer with child in Riverside, California; Interlude, a statue portraying all women in Trinidad, Colorado; and others.

Mr. Coulter was born in Oberlin, Kansas and is a sculptor of abstract human figures who became widely known in the Midwest in the later part of the 20th Century. He studied at Ft. Hays State University, earning both a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts, and at the University of Kansas where he earned a Master of Fine Arts Degree. In 1963, he became a Professor of Art at Hastings College in Nebraska.

Cincinnati Police Captain and Fraternal Order of Police Queen City Lodge Vice President Heydon Thompson attended a National Fraternal Order of Police Convention in Mobile, Alabama in 1987 and this statue was the main door prize, which Captain Thompson won.

Captain Thompson kept the sculpture as a prized possession prominently displayed in his home. About 2014, out of curiosity but never intending to sell it, he took it to the Antique Road Show, and they estimated its value at $5,000 to $7,000.

He came to feel like it was a part of his life, but with a medical scare at almost 88 years old, to ensure it was properly cared for in the future, he donated it to the Greater Cincinnati Police Museum.
