Bill was born December 15, 1950 in Georgetown, Kentucky to farmers, James L. and Mary Katherine “Kitty” (Wells) Murphy. He earned a degree in Criminal Justice from Eastern Kentucky University.
Bill joined federal law enforcement in June 1972 in the Department of Justice, Bureau of Corrections at Blackburn Correctional Facility in Lexington. In 1974, he went on to work for probation and parole in Lexington, Kentucky and as a Deputy Sheriff in Scott County.
Bill joined the United States Secret Service on June 30, 1975 and served in the Louisville Field Office until October 23, 1977 when he transferred to the New York Field Office. On December 30, 1979, he transferred to the Atlanta Protective Division providing security for President and Mrs. Jimmy Carter and their family residing in Georgia. After Carter left office, in March 1981, he was assigned to the former president and his wife in the Carter Protective Division. On January 8, 1984, Special Agent Murphy transferred to the Cincinnati Field Office. Special Agent Murphy retired January 6, 1996 with 23 years of service to his country and our community.
He continued his service as a Deputy United States Marshal serving in Federal Court and as a Deputy Sheriff in Boone County.
He was a member of the Retired Secret Service Association and Rabbit Hash Sportsman’s Association. He was also inducted into the “1132 Legends,” a decades-old, informal Cincinnati Police organization.
Special Agent Murphy died on November 5, 2024.
Special Agent Murphy is survived by his wife of 54 years, Linda (Hiten) Murphy; children, Tracy Ann (Jason) Bright and Bryan J. (Vanessa) Murphy; grandchildren, Christopher Bright, Matthew Bright, Faith Murphy, Elijah Murphy, Olivia Bright, and Stella Murphy; great-grandchildren, Taylor Bright and Hailey Bright; brother, Gene (Debbie) Murphy; and uncle, Charlie (Becky) Murphy.
A visitation will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at Johnson’s Funeral Home in Georgetown, Kentucky. Funeral services will held at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at the Masonic Cemetery in Stamping Ground, Kentucky.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation.
