Patrolman Donald “Don” Lucas P549
(1938-2024)

 

Don was born August 24, 1938 to Edward Lucas. He attended Western Hills High School, graduating in 1957.

He worked for Good Samaritan Hospital as a carpenter from 1960 to 1967. He then worked as a skip tracer for Liberty Loan Company for a few months. For six months, he worked as a mechanic for Mergard’s Bowling Lanes.

Don joined Cincinnati city service in June 1968 as a laborer for the Public Utilities Department.

Don transferred to the Cincinnati Police Division on September 15, 1968 in their 51st Recruit Class. On December 22, 1968, he was promoted to Patrolman, issued Badge 549, and assigned to District 5 (1012 Ludlow Avenue). On March 3, 1974, Officer Lucas was transferred to District 1, Sector 5 (310 Lincoln Park Drive). On February 20, 1983, he transferred to the Impound Lot. Officer Lucas resigned on July 25, 1986, with 18 years of service and 21 letters of appreciation and/or commendation.

Officer Lucas died on July 19, 2024 at the age of 85.

He was predeceased by his son, Branden Lucas, and siblings, Johnny and Sally. Officer Lucas is survived by his wife of 41 years, Sandie Lucas; children, Karen (Daniel) Goerler, Julie (Buddy) Davis, Donald E. (Laura) Lucas, Jeffrey (Amber) Lucas, Edward (Michelle) Lucas, and Sarah (Sonny) Hibbard; 12 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on July 26, 2024 at Radel Funeral Home at 650 Neeb Road. Burial will immediately follow at Arlington Memorial Gardens.
