Captain David L. Stanley
C-10 (1949-2024)

Dave was born January 23, 1949 in Cincinnati to James H. and Rita (Daum) Stanley. Within two years, his father joined the Cincinnati Police Division in the 24th Police Recruit Class. Dave was attending Roger Bacon High School when his father was promoted to Sergeant, and then to Lieutenant. Dave graduated in 1967. A year later, he attended the University of Cincinnati, and majored in Sociology.

Dave enlisted in the United States Army on July 17, 1969, during the Vietnam War. After basic training, he went to medical training at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. For 14 months he was assigned as a Medical Specialist in a field hospital in Wurzburg, Germany. Specialist 4 Stanley was honorably discharged February 23, 1972.

He is a U.S. Army Veteran and When he returned, he worked at Hoxworth Blood Center as a phlebotomist

Dave joined the Cincinnati Police Division on October 29, 1972 in the 58th Recruit Class. By then, his father was a relatively famous personality as a helicopter traffic reporter. Dave was promoted to Patrolman on February 25, 1973, issued Badge 611, and assigned to District 4 (7017 Vine Street). On May 26, 1974, he was rotated to District 6 (3295 Erie Avenue). His father retired in 1978. Officer Stanley earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Cincinnati on March 17, 1979. He earned a Master of Education degree from Xavier University on August 21, 1981. He was promoted to Sergeant on November 3, 1981, issued Badge S-5, and reassigned to District 4 (by then at 4150 Reading Road). On April 17, 1983 he was rotated to District 1 (310 Ezzard Charles Drive). Sergeant Stanley transferred to Research and Development Section in February 1985.

Five months later, he was promoted to Lieutenant and issued Badge L-1. A year later, he was reassigned to District 4. A year after that, he was appointed Administrative Assistant to the Technical Services Bureau Commander. On January 10, 1988, Lieutenant Stanley was reassigned to Planning, Research, and Development. He was promoted to Captain on May 5, 1991, issued Badge C-10, and appointed Police Academy Commander. During 1994, Captain Stanley graduated from the Police Executive Leadership College (PELC). He also commanded the Community Services Section, Police Communications Section, and District 2. Captain Stanley retired on July 26, 1997 with 27 years of service to our country and community and 36 letters of appreciation and/or commendation, including four from Police Chief Michael Snowden, one from Safety Director William Gustavson, and one from the Hamilton County Police Association.

Captain Stanley then went on to teach in the Cincinnati Public Schools, at Aiken High School, as a law enforcement classroom instructor. He also went on to a career as a Staff Representative for the Ohio FOP Labor Council, negotiating many contracts around the state of Ohio.

By mid-2023, Captain Stanley was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia and admitted into an eastside nursing home. In August 2024, he suffered a heart attack and was further disabled. He died at 12:15 a.m. on August 29, 2024, at the age of 75.

Captain Stanley is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda C. (Buken) Stanley; children, Jeff (Stacie Stark) and Sara Uhl (Jess); and ten grandchildren.

Visitation will be held 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 9, 2024, at Guardian Angels Church at 6539 Beechmont Avenue. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 11000 Montgomery Road.

Memorials may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Pregnancy Center Plus, and/or Lewy Body Dementia Association.
