Garry and his twin brother, Jerry, were born September 12, 1948 in Hamilton to Christian C. and Evelyn Jean (Theobald) Grammel, III. They both attended Garfield High School and participated in basketball, baseball, and intramurals. Garry was additionally on student council all four years. They graduated in 1966. Both went on to college and to play baseball, Garry at Belmont College.

Both began their careers as physical education teachers, Garry at Union Elementary School in Union (now West Chester) Township.

Garry joined the Hamilton Police Department on July 7, 1975. Throughout that career, he was heavily involved in community outreach programs. He was a certified defensive driving instructor, Emergency Vehicle Operator coach, and Crime Prevention Officer. He also served on the Board of Directors of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #38. Officer Grammel retired September 13, 1997 with 22 years of service to his community.

He then went on to teach at the Butler Tech High School criminal justice program and the Butler Tech Police Academy and served there several more years.

Officer Grammel died after a brief cardiac illness on March 6, 2024 at the age of 75. Chief Craig Bucheit ordered a seven-day mourning period within the Department.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Jerry Grammel and Bruce Lee Grammel. Officer Grammel is survived by his wife of almost 48 years, Mary Kay (Vogeler) Grammel, and sons, Brian Stephen (Ellen) Grammel, Brent Scott (Sara) Grammel, and Edward (Kerry) Grammel; and grandchildren, Caleb, Olivia, Alexander, Evan, Ryder, Ellyanne, Lyra, Eli, and Emerson.

Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 15, 2024, at the Avance Funeral Home and Crematory at 4976 Winton Road in Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Larry Tharp at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 400 Niles Road in Fairfield. Burial to follow at Butler County Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to The Nuxhall Miracle League or Badin High School.
