Shirley was born August 18, 1928 in Cincinnati to Herman J. and Mary Sauer of Avondale. Though she lived at 898 Rockdale Avenue near Victory Parkway, she and her sister daily walked to Reading Road, took a streetcar to downtown, transferred to the Brighton car, then to the Westwood line and, after getting off at Montana and Epworth Avenues, walked ¾ of a mile to Mother of Mercy High School where she attended on scholarship. She also participated in the Catholic Students’ Mission Crusade, Bowling League, and Choral Group and graduated in 1946. She then attended Campbell’s Business College, majoring in shorthand and advanced typing, until June 1960.

From April 1959 to June 1963, she worked as a private secretary at the Andrew Jergens Company on Spring Grove Avenue. She then worked for a year as a secretary at McAuley High School. From October 1964 to January 1968, she was a secretary for D. H. Baldwin Company and transferred to Dunham Hospital, which was phased out during July 1971.

Shirley joined the Cincinnati Police Division on August 8, 1971 as a Clerk Typist 2 and was assigned to the Criminalistics Section. On October 20, 1974, her position was reclassified as a Clerk 3. Then, on August 30, 1981, it was reclassified again to Clerk-Typist 3. She transferred to the Warrant Processing/Criminal History Unit on August 18, 1985. She earned superior performance evaluations during her entire career. Clerk Typist Sauer retired on January 1, 1989 after 17 years of service to her community.

She then volunteered at the University of Cincinnati’s Hoxworth Blood Center, amassing more than 500 hours of volunteer time by 1994.

Clerk Typist Sauer died after an exceptionally lingering illness on date February 7, 2024 at the age of 95. Prior to then she was the fifth-longest living retired Cincinnati Police employee.

She was predeceased by her sister, Mary Lou (Julius) Uehlein. Clerk Typist Saur is survived by her brother, Dan (Judy) Sauer, and nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 19, 2024, at Bayley Chapel, 990 Bayley Drive, in Delhi.
