Specialist Edgar H. Ledwin, Jr.  PS-40  (1928-2023)

Ed was born April 8, 1928 to Edwin H. Ledwin, Sr. He attended North College Hill High School for two years.

On April 9, 1944, one day after his 16th birthday, Ed enlisted in the United States Marine Corps to fight in World War II. He did two tours overseas carrying a Browning Automatic Rifle. He served until at least June 1, 1947 and was honorably discharged. On September 20, 1950, he was recalled for the Korean War. Staff Sergeant Ledwin was again honorably discharged September 13, 1951 with a letter of commendation, Good Conduct Medal, and a Purple Heart.

Aside from his time in Korea, Ed worked at the Formica Company from 1950 to 1952. He then worked at overhauling jet engines at General Electric until 1953.

Ed joined the Cincinnati Police Division on April 12, 1953 as a Police Recruit. Two months later, he was assigned to District 4 (7017 Vine Street) to complete his training. A month later, he was promoted to Patrolman and issued Badge 515. A year later, he was rotated to District 7 (813 Beecher Street). On February 22, 1955, he transferred back to District 4. Patrolman Ledwin also served in District 6 (3295 Erie Avenue). On February 27, 1966, he was among the first group promoted to the new rank of Police Specialist. He was issued Badge PS-40. In April 1966, Specialist Ledwin was assigned to the Vice Control Bureau. Four months later, he transferred to District 5 (1012 Ludlow Avenue). On February 7, 1971, Specialist Ledwin was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Section and assigned to the Burglary Squad. During December 1976, he transferred to the District Four Investigative Unit (4150 Reading Road). On April 3, 1977, he transferred to the Criminalistics Section. Specialist Ledwin retired on July 3, 1982 with 33 years of service to his country and community and ten letters of appreciation and/or commendation, including four from police chiefs and one from the mayor.

Ed passed away on Wednesday February 8, 2023 at age 92.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Sherry Lee (Michael John) Lude, and sister, Dolores Ledwin. Specialist Ledwin is survived by his wife of 71 years, Martha (Grosheim) Ledwin; children, Michael Joseph (Elizabeth Feltner) Ledwin, Theresa Lynn (Terence) Moses, and Joyce Ann (Carl Dale) Terry; grandchildren, Roxana, Sean, Lee, Eric, and Michael; many great-grandchildren, and siblings, Jane, Dorothy, Carolyn, Charles.

Visitation will be held 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, February 10, 2023 at the Hodapp Funeral Home in College Hill.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Ohio Living Life Care.
