Specialist Daniel Christopher Jones, Sr. PS-234 (1942-2022)

Dan was born October 8, 1942, to a Canadian immigrant, J. Elwood Jones, and Viola S. Jones of Illinois. He attended North College Hill High School graduating in 1960. He also attended Xavier University and University of Cincinnati until 1965.

While attending high school, he worked at the Kroger Store on Hamilton Avenue. After graduation he took a position with the Hilton Davis Chemical Company as a Color Technician. In August 1966, he worked as a Technician at the National Lead Company of Ohio.

He also joined the United States Army Reserve on October 13, 1964, concluding basic at Fort Jackson. He served six months active duty in the Quartermaster Company of Ft. Thomas, Kentucky.

On March 12, 1967, Dan joined the Cincinnati Police Division as a Police Recruit. He was promoted to Patrolman on June 4, 1967, issued Badge 393, and assigned to District 5 (1012 Ludlow Avenue). On February 25, 1973, Patrolman Jones transferred to District 1 (310 Lincoln Park Drive). He was promoted to Police Specialist a year later, on March 24, 1974, and issued Badge PS-234 and was assigned as an investigator in Sector 6. Four years later, on February 5, 1978, Specialist Jones transferred to the Homicide Squad (222 E. Central Parkway). He completed the University of Louisville Southern Police Institute Homicide Investigation course, University of Michigan Department of Pathology Investigation of Violent Deaths course, FBI Academy’s Advanced Latent Fingerprint School and Fingerprint Photography School, and other investigative courses. After ten years of investigating deaths, Specialist Jones transferred to the Criminalistics Section. He was certified by the International Association of Identification as a Latent Fingerprint Examiner, Senior Crime Scene Analyst, and Latent 10-Print AFIS Operator. Specialist Jones retired on March 25, 1995. He was rehired as a civilian Criminalist. He resigned on February 5, 2000 with 35 years of service to his country and community and 44 letters of appreciation and/or commendation: including five from Cincinnati police chiefs, four from Cheviot, U.C., Mt. Healthy, and Woodlawn police chiefs, three from Covington, Kentucky State Patrol, and Michigan State investigative commanders, a Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge and Chief Assistant Prosecutor, and an FBI special agent in charge.

Specialist Jones died suddenly on August 4, 2022. He was almost 80 years old.

He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Judy D. Jones, and brother, retired Cincinnati Police Specialist Arthur E. Jones. Specialist Jones is survived by his children, Lori L. Gill and Daniel C. Jones, Jr.; grandchildren, Kayla (Josh) Love, Breauna Jones, and Alex Jones; and great-grandson, Elijah Love; and siblings, retired Cincinnati Police Captain Kenneth (Mary) Jones, and Linda Redmon.

Visitation will be held 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on August 18, 2022, at Paul R. Young Funeral Home in Mt. Healthy. A FOP service will be held at 11:45 a.m. and a memorial service at 12:00 p.m. Inurnment will follow at Arlington Memorial Gardens.
