Sergeant Barry Lawrence “Pappy” Gray (1960-2022)

Barry was born January 5, 1960, in Barren County, Kentucky to Mildred Thomas (Berry) and Billy Walden Gray.

Barry joined the Oxford Police Department as a Police Officer on May 31, 1982. He was promoted to Sergeant on February 4, 1997. He also served as the Police Chaplain Liaison Officer and Race Relations Officer. Sergeant Gray retired October 31, 2001.

In 2002, he became a Labor Representative for the Fraternal Order of Police, Ohio Labor Council.

Sergeant Gray and his wife owned the Oxford Martial Arts and Fitness where he was a 3rd Degree blackbelt. He was also a member, elder, and Associate Pastor at Berean Bible Church.

Sergeant Gray suffered a fatal medical emergency at his home on August 12, 2022.  He was 62.

Sergeant Gray is survived by his wife of almost 38 years, Sherry L. Gray; children Adriel (David) Gray Wiseman, Miami University Police Officer Jacob (Brittany) Gray, Carman (Jason) Gray Clark, Miami University Police Officer Joshua (Ashley) Gray, Joel Gray and Abigail Gray; grandchildren, David Wiseman, Jr., Dillon Wiseman, Luke Wiseman, Solomon Wiseman, Silas Wiseman, Asher Gray, Levi Gray, Isaiah Gray, Evan Clark, Laurel Clark, Addelyn Gray, Elijah Gray, and Emersyn Gray; parents, Bill Waldon and Mildred (Thomas) Gray; and sister Dana (Orville) Gray Bailey.

Visitation will be held 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at Ogle and Paul R. Young Funeral Home at 5086 College Corner Pike in Oxford. A FOP service will be held at 11:50 a.m.  A funeral service will follow.
