Lieutenant James E. Hicks, Jr. L-38 (1944-2021)

Jim was born September 2, 1944 and attended Central High School graduating in 1963.

After high school, Jim went to work with Hill and Griffith on State Avenue as a packer operator from June 1964 to August1965.

On August 9, 1965, he was drafted into the United States Army.  Sergeant Hicks was honorably discharged on August 1, 1967.

Jim went back to work with Hill and Griffith from August 1967 to May 1968.

During May 1968 he began working as a guard at the Cincinnati Workhouse until October 1972.

Jim joined the Cincinnati Police Division as a Police Recruit on October 29, 1972.  He was promoted to Patrolman on February 5, 1973, issued Badge 178, and assigned to District 1 (310 Lincoln Park Drive).  On May 26, 1974, he was rotated to District 5 (1012 Ludlow Avenue).  Police Officer Hicks transferred to the Recruiting Unit in the Personnel Section on October 1, 1979.  He was promoted to Specialist on January 14, 1983, issued Badge PS-159, and assigned to District 4 (4150 Reading Road).  A month later, he transferred back to District 5.  He was promoted to Sergeant on January 12, 1986, issued Badge S-117, and assigned to District 4.  Sergeant Hicks transferred to Youth Aid Unit during April 1987.  On January 1, 1988, he was promoted to Lieutenant, issued Badge L-38, and assigned to Central Vice Control Section.  Lieutenant Hicks transferred to District 5 during June 1994.  Four years later he took over the Investigative Unit.  Lieutenant Hicks retired December 24, 2000, with 34 years of service to his country and community and 19 letters of appreciation and/or commendation.

Lieutenant Hicks died on October 15, 2021 at the age of 77.

Lieutenant Hicks is survived by his wife, Brenda Hicks; children, Denise (Reggie) Clay, Alecia (Reno) Thomas, Alfonzo Dubose, James D. (Latonya) Hicks, Andre’ Williams, Katrina Hicks-Mayes, and Jamie (Jamar) Riley; 21 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Robert Lee (Bunnie) Hicks, Gloria Ward, Mary Elizabeth (Walter) Jackson, Pamela Coach, Renee Burt, and Carla Hicks.

Visitation will be held 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, October 29, 2021, at the Thompson, Hall, and Jordan Funeral Home at 11400 Winton Road.  FOP Services are at 11:30 a.m.  A funeral service will be held at noon.  Live streaming will begin at 11:45 a.m. on the Thompson, Hall, and Jordan website.  Interment will follow in Spring Grove Cemetery.
