Police Officer Joan Helen Volpenhein (1931-2018)

Joan was the first female police officer for the City of Newport and Campbell County in the 1970’s and was touted as an expert marksman.

She was a lifelong member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #10.

Joan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s about 2009.  She moved into the Carmel Manor Nursing Home during 2016. Joan passed away Friday, November 30, 2018, surrounded by family at the nursing home.  She was 87.

She was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey Feldkamp, and daughter, Stephanie (Stevie) Smith.  Joan is survived by her brother, George Decker; daughters, Melanie Chalk and Lisa (Doug) Steffen; grandchildren, Shelly, Amy, Bryan, Adam, Brad, Amanda, Cory, Erica, Anna and Sara; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great- grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at St. Therese Church in Southgate.
