Patrolman John Gary Berns (1948-2018)

John was born August 2, 1948 to Emmert G. and Beatrice (O’Herron) Berns.  He attended Elder and Western Hills High Schools, graduating from the latter in 1967.

John was drafted into the United States Army on August 25, 1967 and served in the Artillery as a radar operator and in the infantry as a Driver Mechanical Transport 2nd Class.  He was honorably discharged as a Specialist E-4 on August 22, 1969.

John joined the Cincinnati Police Division as a Police Recruit on February 28, 1971.  He was promoted to Patrolman on June 27, 1971, issued Badge Number 206, and assigned to District 5 (1012 Ludlow Avenue).  He resigned on August 23, 1972 for other prospects.

Patrolman Berns suffered a fatal heart attack on February 4, 2018.

He is survived by siblings, Carol (Chief Michael) Snowden, Diane (Charles) Homan, Linda (Grady) Morgan, Judith (Gary) Ruberg, and Timothy (Nicki) Berns.
