Major Michael L. Portteus (1960-2018)
Mike was born on September 21, 1960 in Blue Ash to United States Army Captain Willard Lewis and Shirley Jean (Todd) Portteus.
Mike joined the Indiana Department of Natural Resources as a Conservation Officer on August 14, 1983 and was assigned to Dearborn County. During 1992, he transferred to Jefferson County, then again to Greene County. In 1998, Officer Portteus earned the Indiana Society of the Sons of the American Revolution Law Commendation and Medal. On September 16, 2001, he was promoted to Lieutenant of records and communication for the department’s Law Enforcement Division. During 2003, Lieutenant Portteus was the recipient of the Director’s Leadership Award. On August 16, 2004, he was promoted to Captain and, in 2007, earned another Director’s Leadership Award in addition to the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Service. He was promoted to Major on June 5, 2011. During 2015, Major Portteus received a Letter of Appreciation for Exemplary Performance for his lifesaving efforts while assisting a motorcycle accident victim. During 2018, after 34½ years, he was still serving as Major of Support Services.
He also belonged to the Spencer Masonic Lodge and the Valley of Terre Haute Scottish Rite.
Major Portteus passed away at his residence on Saturday, January 20, 2018. He was 57.
Michael is survived by his mother and father; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Edward R. and Sue Smith; wife of 32 years, Angela Marie (Smith) Portteus; son, Ian Michael Smith (Kristen) Portteus; grandchildren, Greyson Portteus and Claira Portteus; brothers, Patrick (Sally) Portteus and James (Amy) Portteus; and sister-in-law, Anita (Nathan) Beining.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, as were Masonic services, at the Christian Life Center in Spencer. Visitation was also held on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, before funeral services officiated by Pastor Dawn Wild. Burial followed in Riverside Cemetery, Spencer.
